Asa is a native of Clearfield, PA. Musical studies began with Frank Straley and continued through high school with Eileen Brown. Asa began his career as a church musician when he was a freshman in High School. Asa sang with and later accompanied then directed the Clearfield Choral Society. He was he first student to double major in Sacred Organ Performance and Piano Performance at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Trudy Faber was Asa's organ instructor. Stephen Siek, Dr. Robert Wynne and Dr. William Walters were his piano professors. Asa also attended the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule in West Germany for two years, having studied organ with Karl Hochreiter and Liturgisches Orgelspiele with Renate Zimmerman and piano with Herbert Froundijan. Vocal instructors were Dr. Orcenith Smith at Wittenberg, Frau Nagata in West Berlin, Rosette Hillgrove at Dusquene University and R. Eugene Smith and Rebecca Ryan in Clearfield.
Asa sang in the Chapel Choir, The Wittenberg Choir, Schola Cantorum and the Phi Mu Alpha Barbershop Group. He was also Chapel Organist, played at Christ Lutheran Church in Springfield, OH and substituted at local churches. In West Berlin Asa played at the American Church, the Kaiser-Wilhelm Kapelle, and at local churches.
He sang with the Spandau Kantori, a group that sang for National Radio, television, and public concerts. Asa played at the American House in Berlin and also performed a solo organ concert.
Asa has been a church musician for over 31 years and a private music teacher for 25 years. Bi-lingual teaching was how Asa first began. He is an accredited Suzuki-Piano Meth music teacher.
Asa has sung with and accompanied the touring choirs of Juniata College, the PA Chamber Chorale, and the Regent Chorale. These groups have traveled to Romania, The Czech Republic, Hungary, West Germany, Austria, New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, and Ireland. This has enabled Asa the opportunity to play many historic and/or celebrated pipe organs in these countries where he was able to share many of his favorite organ works with audiences.
Asa sings tenor and is the accompanist for the State College Choral Society. He represented the society in the first ever Honor Choirs in San Diego and Rhode Island at ACDA Convetions. Asa sang with, accompanied, and served on the board of the PA Chamber Chorale. Asa also has served as Juniata College's Organists.
Asa has been a consultant for churches desiring to restr or purchase instruments. He has played for various dedications, special benefits, and other concert performances. Asa is in demand as an organist for weddings and funerals, as a pianist for special events, and as an accompanist for soloist and/or groups
Asa is Director of Music at First Evangelical Church in Altoona, PA and music teacher for TLC School. Asa also teaches piano, organ, and voice privately in Clearfield, State College, Altoona, and Elk County in Pennsylvania.
Asa is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, The American Guild of Organists, and the Suzuki Association of the America's. In 2007 Asa accompanied the State College Choral Society's performance of Glenn McClure's "St Francis in the Americas" and Paul Basler's "Missa Kenya" both on 1/28/07. Then on 1/22/07 the society invited Asa to be guest organist for their performance of Ernest Bloch's "Avodath Hakodesh".
On 8/19/07 JIMASA(Jim White and Asa) performed at the Sunday Concerts in August at the Canal Basin Park in Hollidaysburg, PA. Jim sang and Asa accompanied him.
"Reflections of Our Faith Concerts", Sacred piano/organ duets, Betty Wingert - pianist and Asa - organist, were recently performed in Altoona on 10/28, 11/14, in Dubois on 11/11, and in Pleasant Valley near Woodland on 11/17.
Asa is always looking for eager, serious students to teach.
Asa Carns has a private music studio in his home in Clearfield, PA where he teaches private piano, organ, and voice lessons. Asa is a member of the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, the Suzuki Association of the Americas, the American Guild of Organists, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Lessons are in 1/2 hr units, 1 hr lessons are also available.
Asa will teah anyone ages 3 and up, he has taught people who are in their retirement years.
Activities to enhance performing skills are organized 3 times a year. They include informal gatherings, can have a fun atmosphere (ex: Halloween, Christmas).
Asa looks forward to hearing from students and families who are serious about learning music, he is a not a babysitter.
Asa strives to match students with the correct method that suites them. For accelerated learning, Suzuki is recommended.
Lessons are 1/2 hr long, they can be 1-on-1 or with teacher, child, and parent.
Group lessons are 45 minutes to an hour long. In group lessons, students learn about musicl concepts, perform for one another, and play creative learning games.
While taking organ lessons, you will learn:
- How the Organ works.
- How to decide what stops to use while playing.
- How to select appropriate church music.
- How to choose music for special festivals, concerts, etc.
* Before taking organ lessons, it is usually recommended to have some keyboard experience.
